Wiston
The castle lies just half a mile south-west of a recently discovered Roman fort.
Wiston has a small shell keep on a motte. Other examples are found at Arundel, Berkeley, Carisbrooke, Clare, Farnham,
Kilpeck, Launceston,
Lewes, Lincoln,
Pickering, Restormel, Tamworth, Totnes, Trematon, Warwick and Windsor.
In Wales there are
Brecon, Cardiff, Powis and Tretower. While France has fine examples at Chateau Sur
Epte and Gisors. There is also Dungarvan in Ireland and the mottless gloriette at Leeds castle in Kent.
