Lincoln
Lincoln has 2 keeps on mottes. The one above is the shell keep with projecting gatehouse and pilaster buttressses. Other shell keeps exist at Arundel,
Berkeley, Cardiff, Carisbrooke, Clare, Kilpeck, Leeds, Lewes, Marlborough, Oxford, Restormal, Tamworth, Tonbridge, Totnes,
Tremarton, Tretower, Warwick, Windsor and Wiston. There are also Dungarvan in Ireland as well as Chateau Sur Epte and Gisors in France.

Above, the west gate at
Lincoln castle with its fine Romanesque arch and 'Byzantine' doorway
set in ashlar which led onto the barbican. Note the herringbone masonry to the right of the gatehouse on top of the Roman wall.
