Muthill
Muthill is said to have been a religious centre before Dunblane.
However the church first comes to mention in the period
1195-99 when Malise (d.1211) the son of Earl Ferchard of Strathearn
(d.1141/59) granted it to Lindores abbey. The gift was
confirmed by Pope Innocent III in 1199.
Description
The tower forms one of the group of 5
in
Scotland, the others being at Dunblane cathedral, Dunning,
Markinch and St Rule.
Like most of the others this tower is 4 storeys high and
terminates in a bell chamber that once had Romanesque, twin light bell
openings to the 4 winds. It is made of a red sandstone ashlar and
had insteps at each floor. Entrance to the tower is currently
gained from the east, through the ruined later church nave, but there
is no trace of a tower arch.
