Branston

The church tower is clearly old, having long and short work quoins.  At the base of the tower on the western side is a fine Romanesque doorway of 3 orders set on a pair of pilars and surrounded by a tall, blind Romanesque arcade.  At the summit of the tower are some Romanesque bell openings similar to those found in many other pre-Conquest bell towers, viz. Appleton le Street, Bishop Hill, Bolam, Cabourne, Glentworth, Great Hale, Harpswell, Heapham, Hovingham, Jarrow, Kirk Hammerton, Kirkburn, Ledsham, Lincoln St Benedicts, Lincoln St Mary le Wigford, Lincoln St Peter, Little Ouseburn, Marton, Monk Fryston, MonkwearmouthMorland, Old Clee, Ovingham, Rothwell, Waithe, Weaverthorpe, Wharram le Street, Winterton, Worlaby and many others.
