Comparisons with other early masonry enclosure castles are made and the royal history of the site is explored from the days of William Fitz Osbern to Edward I. Eleven photographs, 3 plans and a map help explain the site, which, during its lifetime saw the castle perform a 180 degree change in orientation and the construction of a peel during the reign of Edward II.
