Braunton

Braunton was recorded as having a priest in 857 and is dedicated to the sixth century Celtic Saint Brannock.  The church is one of only 9 mentioned in Domesday Book in Devon, 4 of this number actually being in Exeter city.

Description
The tower base is massive and possibly ancient, while the unusual broach spire is made from trees planted 'before 1066'.  As the tower base is of a different build to the eleventh century spire it is by definition older.  As one of its surviving slit windows has a Saxon stone lintel it seems likely that this tower base could date back to the mention of a priest in 857.  The nave at 34' wide is possibly also early and maybe similar to the one found at Clodock in Ewias.
