Kirkbride
An odd chancel and nave church set on the hightest point of a
first century AD Roman fort later made a part of the Hadrian's Wall
defences. Externally the church is non-descript, but internally
there is a fine, early Romanesque chancel arch flanked in the nave by 2
Romanesque niches. Were these originally access ways to an
ambulatory or crypt, somewhat similar to the ones at Repton or Brixworth?
The dedication is to a sixth century abbess of Kildare, while the
church was first mentioned in 1189, but heavily rebuilt 1895-98 when
the entire chancel was taken down and rebuilt.
