Barton
This Cumberland church has several odd, early features.
Firstly the tower had fine, elongated early arches to chancel and
nave. These were later filled in and replaced with large, wide,
possibly as late as fifteenth century arches. The original arches were crude
and of 2 orders, the inner one having a sunken fillet. The one
surviving Romanesque window in the tower, facing south, is stepped and
bears some comparison with the loops at Montrichard keep and Grosmont
hall block. There are traces of an early arcade in the nave wall,
while the blocked southern priest's doorway with a three quarter
moulding appears to have been reset.
