Swyncombe
Swyncombe church is a plain, simple building, built of coursed
flint rubble with herringbone work and limestone ashlar dressings.
It is claimed to be eleventh century. In the nineteenth
century the Romanesque chancel arch was enlarged leading to Medieval
wall paintings being found in the apse and repainted. The north
doorway was blocked before 1845. This is an odd affair with a
poor Romanesque segmental arch, beneath which is a rectangular doorway
with an impressive lintel. One lancet window in the north wall of
the apse and others in the nave seem to be ancient, but the rest has
been heavily restored in the nineteenth century.
