Tal y Cafn

A small, damaged motte on the lowest fordable point of the Afon Conwy. There is a platform for a bailey to the north, but no definite defences.

The castle has little known history, but was apparently the fortress held by the men of King Dafydd ab Owain (d.1200/03) against Gruffydd ap Cynan (d.1200) and Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (d.1240) in 1194. The castle, together with Pentrefoelas was probaby destroyed then and never rebuilt. The evidence of their brief history is told in the book on Aberconwy Abbey.
